Your water problems
The first step is to determine the water problems you are facing. Does your water come from the city or from a well? Is sediment your biggest problem or the rusting of old pipes? Are you concerned about the smell and taste of chlorine, or the runoff of herbicides and pesticides?
Answering these questions and knowing what you are trying to filter is going to serve you better than just getting the most expensive or cheapest filtration system.
Filtration level
Once you have analyzed your water situation a bit, you will need to determine the level of filtration that you will be satisfied with. Filtration is measured in microns, and household water filters differ in their classification in microns.
Portable water filters used in wooded areas will often filter down to 0.1 microns. Why ? Because the liquid is raw and often contains harmful substances that can make you seriously ill, such as Giardia, Cryptosporidium, mercury and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
Filters throughout the home system typically filter down to the five micron level. Why not lower? For two reasons: first, the liquid has probably already been treated in a treatment facility. Second, filtering down to the submicron level will slow the flow of water. Ten gallons per minute is roughly the norm for the filters we're looking at here, while half a gallon per minute is considered high speed for 0.1 micron whole house filters.
All of this means that if you're looking to get rid of absolutely everything, you may need to run more than one filter - a whole house system to remove most of the waste, then additional filters at each tap to finish. work. Remember, the whole house filter will filter the power to your water heater, toilet, washing machine, and more. You may not need to get this super clean liquid. But for your drinking water? Maybe you should tighten things up a bit.
A final note on the stages of filtration: in general, the more stages, the better. However, much of this will depend on how each step works and what it does exactly. Several stages will usually filter out smaller and smaller particles as the feed passes from filter to filter. In theory, this is a more efficient plan, but sometimes a single stage filter can do a better job than multiple stages. It all depends on the composition of the filters themselves. The main point - don't get bogged down in finding the most floors. Instead, focus on what they do and what they get rid of.
