There’s no better feeling than getting into your own bed after a long workday. Our bedrooms are our little pieces of heaven - a place where we can relax, feel safe, and comfortable.

However, your bedroom is also a place only you ever visit, and as such, it’s often left undecorated and pretty blank. You probably think that there is no need to put much effort into it.

What you don’t know is that decorating a bedroom can make it feel cozier and more inviting. With décor, you can add a touch of harmony to your sleeping space. If you aren’t sure how to decorate your bedroom to make it more peaceful and relaxing, here are some of the best tips.

Keep it clean and clutter-free

A cluttered bedroom is not a peaceful sleeping space. Quite the contrary, too much clutter in your bedroom can negatively affect you – make you anxious, it can affect your sleep and your ability to focus.

So, if you noticed that you have trouble getting enough sleep, it may have something to do with the clutter in your bedroom.

If you aim to create a harmonious space in your bedroom, the first thing to do is get rid of the clutter and clean up your room. Put away and organize all your clothes, declutter bedside tables, keep the floor clean and clutter-free, remove unnecessary furniture, and so on.

And there you have it, once you get rid of the clutter, you’re already halfway there, closer to creating a peaceful retreat of your bedroom.

Keep it neutral

Bright colors have nothing to do in a bedroom. A bedroom should be a place where you relax and destress, and when you paint and decorate it with bright colours, you’re creating the opposite effect. Bright colors stimulate the brain and mental activity, which is something we don’t want especially when we’re trying to get some sleep.

This is why your bedroom should be painted and decorated with neutral, earthy tones that relax and give off peaceful vibes. Those colors include off-white, nudes, browns, and other calming and peaceful tones and shades. Stay away from crisp white color as well because it also stimulates the brain instead of calming it.

Choosing these neutral colors doesn’t mean that your bedroom will be boring and characterless. It means that you have a perfect base to add a touch of personality with pops of color.

Create a good layout

Another thing that can greatly contribute to the coziness and peacefulness of the bedroom is the right kind of layout. In every bedroom, as the name suggests, the most important element is the bed.

As such bed needs to be positioned so that it is a focal point. Position the bed so that it’s not in line with the door so that this way the bed isn’t blocking the flow of energy. Instead, place the bed so that it is opposite the door, and when you’re laying in it you can see the door.

As a focal point, the bed also needs to be a statement piece of the bedroom. This means that your bed needs to have a nice headboard. In case your bad doesn’t come with one, you can simply DIY a headboard all on your own.

Additionally, if you have an uncomfortable bed, it’s time that changed. You can’t enjoy your bedroom and have a good night’s sleep if your bed is uncomfortable. So, make sure you invest in a good bed or a mattress.

Also, another thing that should be comfortable is your bed linen. Bed linen also plays a huge role in how comfortable and cozy you’re in your bed. So, don’t forget to invest in new sheets and pillows every now and again.

Bedroom furniture

Keeping things simple is the best thing to do. You only need a few essential pieces of furniture in your bedroom. A bed, as already mentioned, should be the most important piece of furniture in your sleeping place. However, you must choose the size of the bed carefully because in a small bedroom too big of a bed can take up valuable space. Similarly, in a big bedroom, too small a bed will look out of place.

Once you have a bed figured out, you can choose the bedside tables. A bedside table is a very convenient piece of furniture and a very versatile one as well. It’s a place to place your nightly essentials such as a glass of water, medication, glasses, and so on. Having bedside tables also means not having to often get up from bed to get those items.

A dresser in a bedroom is a good storage option. A dresser in a bedroom means having where to store toiletries, makeup, and other necessities. Finally, having a chair or a sofa in a bedroom can be very useful.

When choosing the furniture for your bedroom, make sure that it’s made of natural materials such as wood, glass, and fabric. Stay as far away from plastic as possible because of plastic ruins positive energy.

Decorate in pairs

To promote harmony in the bedroom you should decorate it in pairs. This means that everything, from pillows to décor pieces should be in pairs. This design trick helps you alleviate stress and creates symmetry. It also makes it easier to keep things simple and clutter-free.

So, when decorating even if you live on your own, make sure there are two bedside tables, two bedside lamps, two pillows, two seats, and so on.

How to style a bedroom

Styling a bedroom isn’t as difficult as you may think. The main idea is to create a décor that will nourish all your senses. If you decided to listen to our advice and keep the colour of the room neutral, you can now choose an accent colour that will give your room personality.

Whichever colour you choose will be fine as long as that colour isn’t too overpowering. You can also add interest with a subtle pattern. The point is to keep things peaceful and relaxing, while still stylish.

For a cozier feel in the bedroom, don’t leave your floors bare. Instead, play around by layering rugs. Having a soft rug under your feet when you wake up will please your sense of touch. Similarly, keeping your bed cozy, soft, and inviting with lined, sheets, pillows and blankets is a good idea.

The smell in your bedroom should also evoke a feeling of peace and calm. To achieve this you can use scented candles or diffusers with essential oils. Choose oils such as lavender, eucalyptus, marjoram, or Ylang Ylang to name a few.

Lighting in the bedroom

Ideally, natural light is always the best kind of light but is not always achievable. And during the night, the darker the better. This means that installing blackout curtains can help you have a good night’s sleep, plus they also keep the room cool and comfortable.

As for the lighting, options are many but the recommendation is to stay away from harsh overhead lights. Many interior designers agree that the lighting in a bedroom should be layered – it should feature ambient, task, and accent lighting.

This means that you need more than one source of light in the bedroom. In addition to nightstand lamps, you can install recessed lighting, floor lamps, or even wall sconces.

The best thing about lighting is that it can act as a nice accessory, and with so many options you will for sure find something that fits your bedroom style.

What doesn’t belong in a bedroom?

When trying to add a touch of harmony in a bedroom, there are also some things to stay away from.

To protect your mental and physical health at least in your bedroom there shouldn’t be any electronic devices. Apart from your mobile phone, try to keep electronic devices such as TV, laptops, tablets, and other devices away from your bedroom. You’re trying to create a tranquil and peaceful retreat in your bedroom and that won’t be possible if technology is always present.

Another thing that has nothing to do in a bedroom is work-related stuff. Every home should have a space designated for work and that space isn’t your bedroom. Try to keep work as far away from your bedroom as possible.

Additionally, having food and drinks in your bedroom is not very hygienic. You can have a romantic breakfast in bed once or twice, but try not to make it a habit. Having food in the bedroom and on the bed can negatively affect both your sleep and your health.

Creating a peaceful and relaxing retreat in your bedroom may seem complicated at first, but as you see there are a couple of tricks that make it easy. With a bit of creativity and attention to detail, you can add a touch of harmony to your sleeping space.

And as you can see, your bedroom doesn’t have to be boring, it can be stylish and cozy at the same time.
