Technology transforming home design

05 December 2017

When building or renovating a home, there are inevitably going to be things you wish you could go back and change once you see the completed space. Now, thanks to technology, this could be a thing of the past.

There are a number of new innovations that have been developed over the past couple of years that are enabling home owners and builders to solve problems before construction begins and costly mistakes are made.

From walking through your home before it’s been built to viewing furniture in your home before you buy it, technology is ensuring that our homes really are an investment and not a drain on our finances and time.

Life Size Plans

Sydney-based Life Size Plans has developed technology that means house floor plans can be projected onto the floor of the company’s warehouse. This allows builders and owners to walk across a one-to-one scale schematic that shows the complete home, including upper and lower floors, backyards, swimming pools and driveways. Life Size Plans incorporates real furniture, moveable walls and decorations to give customers a true feel of their layout and design.

 Homebyme

Homebyme was developed by French company 3DVIA and turns 2D drawings into 3D renderings. The software allows users to either create their own floor plan or have one created for them, providing a virtual version of the home surroundings. It also allows users to test furniture and play with decoration elements.

 Modsy

Start-up Modsy lets you try out furniture in your virtual house before you buy it. Users upload a few photos of their room and Modsy clears everything away to create a 3D model of the room to scale. Styling tools are then used to design the room, with multiple layout options and different products available.

As the editor of BUILD I have a keen interest in sustainable housing and new technologies.
