Timber Doors - glazing

I'm interested to know whether AS2047, AS 1170.2 apply to glazed timber doors in designated cyclone areas? Building codes stipulate compliance is required with these standards. I understand AS1288 applies, but am uncertain about the other two.

Should AS2047 & AS1170.2 also apply to the same doors in non-cyclone designated areas?

Thank you,

Roy

Hi Roy,

Currently hinged doors are not included in AS 2047 however in the next version complete hinged door systems will be included and will go through the same tests as windows and sliding doors. Completed means a fully manufactured system with hinges and locking mechanisms fitted.

Yes you must comply to AS 1288.

AS 1170.2 is the wind loading standard, all sites in Australia must be assessed through this document and assigned wind loads, the construction must then be able to handle the requirements. So your doors would need to be able to handle the wind loads of the site without failing. There is no actual AS 1170.2 test, so speaking with a test lab on how you can show the doors can handle a particular wind load is important.

In cyclonic areas if the construction is not designed with dominant openings then the doors would have to be tested to comply with the cyclonic impact test, this is often a specification in these areas even if the construction is designed for dominant openings.

This will mean a significant change to the glass in doors, there are companies in Australia that have special laminates that have been tested for cyclonic impact. The hardware used on the complete door system would also have to be particularly good to pass the test.
