Where to position your hot water system
Choosing the right location for your hot water system is crucial for efficiency and compliance with regulations. Consider the following:
- System type: Different systems, such as heat pump, gas, or solar, have specific installation requirements.
- Noise considerations: Heat pump systems can generate noise comparable to air conditioning units. In densely populated areas, check the decibel output levels (dBA) and consult with local authorities to ensure compliance with noise regulations.
- Drainage requirements: Ensure proper drainage for water discharged from the temperature and pressure (T&P) valve and discharge pipe. This may necessitate adjustments to existing plumbing or redesigns in new constructions.
- Clearance and installation height: Adhere to the manufacturer’s instructions regarding clearance around the unit and its installation height to ensure safe operation and maintenance access.
- Solar collector placement: If installing solar collectors, ensure your roof can support the weight. Position collectors facing north to maximise sun exposure, but be aware that adding a frame or tank may require roof reinforcement.
Temperature restrictions
To ensure safety and efficiency:
- Storage temperature: All storage tank hot water systems must heat water to a minimum of 60°C to prevent bacterial growth, such as Legionella.
- Delivery temperature: Hot water delivered to taps should not exceed 50°C to prevent scalding injuries.
- Tempering valves: Installing a tempering valve is a common solution to regulate water temperature at the outlet, ensuring it remains within safe limits.
- Compliance: These temperature control measures are mandated by the Plumbing Code of Australia and are enforced in all states and territories.
