Australians embrace global home design trends amid surge in overseas travel

Global trends are transforming Australian style nationwide, as popular travel destinations begin to inspire home interiors.

Data has revealed a spike in Pinterest searches relating to Balinese interior styling during the peak December and January travel period, more than 40% increase in Google searches for Mediterranean home design and a 135% increase in “Japanese living room design” searches on Pinterest, just to name a few.

Beaumont Tiles design specialist Christie Wood says the growth in design is a result in a growing demand for design choices that capture the essence of travel destinations.

“Aussies are blending global influences with our relaxed lifestyle – and it’s showing up in courtyards, bathrooms, and open-plan living areas across the country,” Christie says.

“As people explore more of the world, they’re bringing back not just souvenirs, but a design philosophy.”

Australian interior designer Kara Demmerich says the global design scene is thriving and more connected than ever.

“There’s a real fluidity between global trends and local adaptation right now. What I saw in Milan – earthy textures, tonal layering, and a refined return to natural materials—is exactly what we’re now seeing echo through Australian homes,” Kara says.

“Australians have always been avid travellers, but what’s changing is how we translate those global encounters. It’s not just inspiration – it’s integration. Homeowners are confidently creating spaces that feel deeply personal yet globally informed.”
