Steel and aluminium make for strong, sturdy pergola roofs.

How are steel and aluminium pergola roofs made?

Steel roofing is thin gauge steel which has been treated for rust protection, then painted and baked to bond the coating to the surface.  Once this process is completed, the steel is then cut to size and corrugated to allow for rain runoff. The resultant sheets are lightweight, incredibly durable and can withstand just about any type of weather condition if properly installed.

Steel roofs are UV protected, won’t catch alight in a fire and completely block out all light and rain. The coating on the steel can be 100% zinc (also known as galvanised steel), or it can be coated with a combination of zinc and aluminium, as is the case with products like Zincalume and Galvalume, which can provide even greater protection.

Aluminium roofing is typically even lighter than steel, though slightly less strong. Unlike steel, aluminium does not need to be treated for rust protection as it is already corrosion resistant. This makes it especially useful in coastal applications where constant exposure to salt water and/or sea air would greatly increase the corrosion factor for exposed steel.

Key properties
  • Complete shade – no light will be getting through either of these roofing materials.
  • Can be used in the rain – solid construction means no rainfall getting through while enjoying your pergola or gazebo in wet weather.
  • Huge range of colour options to match your look.

How is metal sheeting attached?

Metal sheets are measured and cut to size using an angle grinder, then hoisted up to the roof and nailed down to the battens at regular intervals, starting from one edge and working across. The sheets are affixed with galvanised nails which are then sealed with a roof sealer or silicon sealant to keep water out.

What variations exist?

There are a huge amount of colour options to choose from, and these can be matched to your paint scheme with samples before purchasing so you can see what your new metal pergola roof might look like. There are also a lot of different styles of corrugations available, with different corrugation intervals, curved and square options and corrugations which may be raised high or low.
