Positioning for efficiency

The location of your hot water system significantly impacts its efficiency and responsiveness. Installing the system close to high-demand taps, such as those in the kitchen, bathroom, or laundry, reduces heat loss and ensures a quicker supply of hot water. This proximity allows the system to operate more effectively, as the water doesn’t have to travel long distances through pipes.

Indoor tank systems

In some situations, hot water systems need to be installed indoors or under cover. When doing so, ensure the unit is well-protected from children and positioned where it won’t be obstructed or damaged. A small cupboard can often serve this purpose. It’s crucial to allow sufficient space around the unit for maintenance and ventilation, in accordance with the manufacturer’s requirements and Australian Standard AS/NZS 3500.4:2003 Heated Water Services.

For indoor gas units, an exhaust flue must be installed to vent combusted gases outdoors. Additionally, avoid placing corrosive chemicals near the water heater, as fumes from these substances can corrode internal components.

Solar collector placement

For solar hot water systems, positioning the solar collectors is vital for optimal performance. They should be installed in an unshaded area facing due north, with a pitch angle between 22 and 40 degrees. This orientation maximises sun exposure throughout the day, enhancing the system’s efficiency.

Hot water heater noise

Some hot water systems, particularly heat pump models, emit noise during operation. It’s important to consider this when selecting a location for installation. Position the unit away from bedrooms, living areas, and neighbouring properties to minimise disturbance. Check the product specifications for the decibel (dBA) rating to assess noise levels and select a model that meets your noise tolerance.
