Smeg’s unusual new LIFT downdraft rangehood emerges from the bench when needed.

Smeg has just launched its unusual (and fairly attractive) new LIFT downdraft rangehood. The LIFT is designed to rise directly out of a benchtop surface when needed, and sink back into the cabinetry again to sit neatly inside the bench when it’s not in use. The system is designed to be an elegant alternative to an overhead rangehood, especially for island bench cooktops, small kitchens and kitchens where an overhead rangehood may otherwise be impractical.
Dimensions and capabilities
The LIFT system is designed to be installed either to the side of the cooktop, or behind it, and is 900mm wide. The range sits 310mm above the benchtop surface when it’s fully raised. According to SMEG, its extraction mechanism is designed to be whisper quiet, and capable of extracting air at up to 760 cubic metres of air per hour.
Stainless steel or black mirrored glass
The LIFT system is available in two different finishes – brushed stainless steel (LIFTFPX900) and stainless steel with black mirror glass (LIFTB900), and includes stainless steel and aluminium filters which can be washed in the dishwasher. Both models include an LED panel, a cutoff timer, electronic controls and a delayed-shutoff feature, as well as an indicator light to tell you when the filters need to be cleaned.
