In the rolling hills of Binna Burra, NSW, Loehill House stands as a serene retreat, designed to blend seamlessly with the surrounding natural beauty. Home to Australian cricketer Adam Zampa, his wife Harriet, and their young son, the property embodies the simplicity and elegance of modern farmhouse design, while embracing the rustic charm of the 100-year-old cottage that serves as its foundation.
Surrounded by 66 acres of lush greenery and bordered by the winding Byron Creek, Loehill House was designed with a deep respect for its past. The original cottage, which forms the front part of the home and serves mainly as the sleeping wing, has been lovingly preserved, retaining its character while seamlessly connecting to a modern extension. The extension, linked by a 20m hallway, houses the heart of the home: an expansive open-plan kitchen, dining, and living areas, along with the new master bedroom. The living room transitions easily to the outdoor living spaces and extends further to the pool area.
The design of Loehill House reflects a modern farmhouse aesthetic with influences from the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi, celebrating simplicity, natural materials and the beauty of imperfection. The blend of old and new is intentional, with each element of the home telling a story. The timber floors in the original cottage bear the marks of 100 years of repairs and changes, creating a patchwork of different timbers that the Zampa family chose to highlight rather than conceal.
“We wanted to honour the history of the original cottage while ensuring that the new extension didn’t overshadow its charm,” explains Adam. “The house feels like it belongs here—there’s a sense of continuity between the past and the present.”
Natural materials such as wood, stone, and organic fabrics dominate the interiors, giving the home a warm, lived-in feel. The colour palette is soft and neutral, allowing the surrounding landscape to take centre stage. Subtle wabi-sabi elements are woven throughout the design, creating a serene environment that invites relaxation. Large windows and sliding doors allow natural light to flood the interiors while offering unobstructed views of the rolling hills and lush greenery.
As the Zampa family began to shape their vision for Loehill House, they were mindful of creating a space that was not only visually striking but also comfortable and functional year-round. This balance was achieved through the careful selection of materials and finishes, including the incorporation of Luxaflex Window Fashions.
The soft, natural light filtering through the large windows was one of the standout features of the home, and it was important to control this light in a way that complemented the home’s calming atmosphere. Luxaflex Duette Shades were chosen for their sleek, modern look and energy-efficient properties, ensuring that the home remained warm in winter and cool in summer. The shades are paired with Luxaflex sheer curtains to create a soft, airy feel in the bedrooms and living areas, adding layers of texture that enhance the overall aesthetic, elevating the visual appeal and comfort of the living spaces.
“The Luxaflex products have really elevated the design,” says Adam. “The Duette Shades provide excellent light control, insulation and privacy and an understated elegance that complements the simplicity of the home. In the bathrooms, we’ve been able to marry the old bathroom with the new bathrooms by using Luxaflex PolySatin Plantation Shutters that transcend both styles and are water resistant.”
The seamless flow from the indoor living areas to the outdoor spaces is one of the defining features of Loehill House. Outside, the Zampa family has created a sanctuary with a pool, greenhouse, sauna and ice bath, catering to both relaxation and Adam’s training and recovery regime. In the outdoor living area, Luxaflex external screens have been installed to provide protection from the elements and give the family the flexibility to enjoy the outdoor spaces throughout the year in all weather conditions, without compromising the natural beauty that surrounds them.
“It’s all about creating a home that feels both beautiful and practical. There are some very special spaces,” says Adam. “The master bedroom courtyard, complete with a mature olive tree and an outdoor bath, offers a private retreat that feels deeply connected to nature. The little greenhouse, which has been built from the leftover house
materials is one of our favourite additions, as we spend a lot of time in our vegetable garden. However, the thing that we love the most is having a home spacious enough to accommodate long-term family stays. As we are really family orientated, hosting relatives is very dear to us. This is our dream house.”
Loehill House is a reflection of the Zampa family’s vision for a home that honours the past while embracing the future. The thoughtful design, blending modern farmhouse aesthetics with practical, functional living, ensures the home will be a cherished family retreat for years to come.
