Making summer homes for spring

21 September 2023

With summer around the corner and the anticipation of long weekend barbecues, poolside parties and Christmas celebrations building, now is the time to start refreshing your tired and overgrown yard into a beautiful oasis.

While it can be tempting to put off your backyard renovation until early summer, Beaumont Tiles product specialist Michelle Kearney says spring is the ideal time to get your backyard in shape to become an entertainer’s delight.

“Leaving your reno until early summer means you won’t get to enjoy the space for a whole summer. Starting to plan and renovate as we enter spring means that you can spend your summer months lounging by your beautiful garden, inviting pool or charming courtyard. All it takes is a few simple steps to get started,” Michelle says.

“The first step is looking at the space you have and asking yourself how the space will be used, what style you want it to look like and what would bring you and your family joy and excitement. Pinterest can be your best friend when beginning an outdoor reno as can tools like Beaumonts ‘What’s My Style’ quiz to help you decide on the style you want.”

Michelle suggests five ideas you could try to be summer-ready. The first is freshening your garden, as sometimes all a yard needs are a trim or mow. For extra, Michelle says laying some pavers like the 20mm Legend Sandstone Natural range will enhance the organic feel of the environment.

The next idea is ensuring cleans tiles, which can have them looking luxe for barbecues and other areas. Michelle recommends removing any debris before scrubbing with a cleaning solution using a strong bristled broom, before rinsing off any dirt and cleaning liquid with water and letting it dry.

Sometimes all the outdoor living area requires is just some seats. By bringing out some outdoor furniture, as suggested in Michelle’s third idea, the outdoor space will be ready for gatherings. Facebook marketplace or eBay can be great ways to find some bargains on furniture.

If there are cracks or tiles that are looking a bit worse for wear, it may be time to rebuild your slab. Idea number four is to add some beautiful tiles to elevate a space. Adding a lighter tile like Beaumont’s Screed Ivory Matt, for example, can bring a lighter and brighter courtyard look.

Lastly, getting cozy with a fire is a great and easy way to add a wonderful feature to a space, even in summer. As a low-cost addition, Michelle concludes a fireplace can provide as a centrepeice to a backyard.
