Demand for electricity by regular households has fallen by 8% in four years according to one of Australia’s largest electricity distributors.

Ausgrid, which operates primarily in New South Wales, says energy demand has fallen by 2% every year, with some households even monitoring reductions of up to 8% annually.

A general rise in the price of power bills, consumers switching to more energy efficient hot water systems, and the use of energy saving light globes are some of the suspected causes.

It’s the first fall in electricity demand the company has seen since the 1950s.

The Australian Energy Market Operator is also expected to announce a drop of between 5 and 6% in power demand over the next decade.
