Sculptural simplicity meets ocean views at Tasmania’s Aisling house

Perched on Tasmania’s north-west coast at Leith, Aisling House enjoys sweeping views across Bass Strait, west to the River Forth and framed by the rugged Dial Range and Rocky Cape. Designed by S.Group and built by Immersive Homes, the home’s sculptural yet restrained architecture capitalises on its dramatic coastal setting.

Initially planned as a downsized home, the project evolved into a full-size family residence for the local doctor couple.

“The result is a home that feels generous yet considered, where passive solar design and careful orientation ensure comfort naturally,” S.Group design and project manager Damon Marshall says.

Nestled within native coastal reserve, the ground floor remains discreet from the street while expansive ocean-facing glazing connects interiors to the outdoors. Natural light animates the open spaces throughout the day, enhancing the sense of immersion in the landscape.

Durability was central to the design. Cemintel Territory Woodlands cladding delivers the warmth and texture of timber while withstanding salt, wind and exposure. Darker base materials create tonal contrast, giving the impression that the home floats lightly above the ground.

“We needed something that visually connected the home to its coastal landscape but could also withstand salt air, wind and harsh conditions without frequent maintenance,” Damon says.

“Although the home is two storeys, our vision was to present it as a single sculptural form that floats. The Woodlands boards were essential to achieving that natural, unified look, adding warmth while remaining crisp and modern.”

The upper level houses the main living areas, including a spacious open-plan kitchen, dining and living zone that opens onto a deck via a servery window. At the centre, a double-sided Cheminees Philippe wood heater links dining and lounge areas while reinforcing interior warmth. Tasmanian Oak flooring adds natural texture and the kitchen features Caesarstone benchtops, a walk-in pantry and minimalist joinery.

The master suite occupies a light-filled pavilion with ocean views, while the ensuite showcases custom blackheart sassafras joinery paired with a statement bath. Three additional bedrooms on the lower level enjoy soft natural light and reserve views.

Blending considered architecture with resilient materials and a strong connection to place, Aisling House is a contemporary coastal retreat that celebrates its dramatic surroundings while delivering comfort, performance and timeless appeal.
