Smart styling: Why layered window treatments are making a comeback

As winter settles in, home design is shifting towards comfort. To help stay warm, one of the simplest yet most effective ways to warm up is by layering curtains and blinds.

According to Andersen’s interior designer Delena Pitman, layered window furnishings offer both style and substance.

“They’re not just decorative, they help control light, maintain indoor temperatures and add softness and sophistication to a room,” she says.

Combining sheer curtains with block out blinds, or pairing Roman shades with floor-length drapes, enables homeowners to control light and privacy while enhancing insulation. This is especially important in Australia’s varied climates, where windows can be a major source of heat loss during colder months.

From classic wooden shutters matched with heavy drapes in formal spaces, to double roller blinds for compact rooms like kitchens or bathrooms, layered solutions suit every space and design style. Delena also notes that layering works well in open-plan homes, helping define zones while making large areas feel more intimate and inviting.

For added versatility, she recommends starting with a neutral base and layering in colour and texture depending on the season. Andersen’s newest collection features natural linens, textured weaves and earthy tones that blend seamlessly with timeless appeal.

“Layered window treatments are an easy, low-commitment way to elevate any room,” Delena says.

“They offer warmth, flexibility and a polished finish, without the need to renovate.”
