What are subfloor access doors?

A subfloor access door is a small door or hatchway that allows you to get in under the floor. These are only really necessary if your house is on stumps or is raised in some other manner, with a sealed-off space underneath the house. The subfloor access door is often located outside the building on a rear or side wall. This lets workmen like plumbers and electricians get beneath your floor to perform any maintenance or installations you might need.

 

How do subfloor access doors work?

The access door works like any other small hinged door. It is usually fastened with some sort of dead bolt and padlocked to keep it secure when not in use. The door also typically has a metal grille to allow air flow from underneath.

Where are subfloor access doors used?

These doors are more often found on older style homes, but can be installed in any raised dwelling where access to the subfloor is required.

 

How do subfloor access doors vary?

These doors are usually styled to match the exterior of your house; a weatherboard home may have the weatherboards continue along the face of the door while a brick dwelling may have a solid steel door.
