21 April 2021

Open up Instagram, Pinterest or Houzz and you’re almost guaranteed to see a home or space as you scroll along your feed that features some type of concrete aesthetic. Whether it’s on the floors, walls or joinery, concrete is a modern yet timeless material to use. With a concrete overlay system it’s easier than ever to achieve that concrete aesthetic everyone loves, and it’s more achievable than you think.

A concrete overlay is perfect for clients who:

  • are unable or don’t want to pour a new slab of concrete

  • don’t like the look of their existing concrete floor

  • want to replace old tiles or timber flooring

  • want to save time and costs involved with removing their existing floor

  • want to resurface existing concrete slab because you're unhappy with the appearance and look of the concrete slab.

X-Bond Concrete Overlay System applied to floors at Sussex St residence by Mancini Made

X-Bond is a type of concrete overlay system that's been used in homes throughout Australia for over 20 years. It is installed directly over an existing surfaces using a hand trowel by professional installers. The cement based mix is hand trowelled at approximately 3mm thick over an existing concrete slab, over existing tiles (hallelujah, ugly old tiles be gone!) and over compressed sheeting.

What’s the difference between concrete and a concrete overlay?

Great question! A concrete overlay is a thin coating that’s hand applied over a concrete slab or another surface. Instead of being poured, a concrete overlay is installed at a minimal thickness (usually 3mm) and is a cement based 'coating'. Concrete overlays has a more uniform look than concrete, and is available in a range of colours and finishes.

Can a concrete overlay be applied over in-slab heating?

With a concrete overlay system like X-Bond, it can be applied over in-slab heating. First a thin screed would need to be applied directly over the heating, and then the X—Bond would be hand trowelled over the heating.
