Can Exterior Shades Save On Energy Costs?

06 September 2021

Energy consumption is a problem that people around the world are facing, especially with depleting resources to provide for the demand. This is why many people are looking for solutions that will help save energy consumption and thereby the costs involved with the same as well. For many people, one purpose of getting blinds and shutters in Sydney for their homes is of this very same purpose.

Although we are all used to getting window treatment for our interior windows, such as curtains, shades, shutters or blinds in Sydney, did you know that exterior shades can also help save on energy costs? The window is one of the areas of the house that can increase the heat or cold within, because when the window gets heated it heats up the inside house as well. However, with window treatments in place, these act as barriers between the window and the interior of the house, so that the heat (or cold) does not penetrate inside.

There is, however, a way of increasing the energy efficiency in your home, and that is by using exterior shades or shutters in combination with interior ones, for maximum benefit.

Here are some options of external window treatment that can reduce your energy consumption and bills.

-          Exterior Shutters – These types of window coverings are made of many different types of material, including aluminium, wood and vinyl, among others. Roller shutters are great at providing complete privacy, safety and protection from the elements when completely closed. It fits in tightly to the exact size of the window and does not allow any heat or light to penetrate through to the inside. This is why using these shutters can help with saving energy consumption.

-          Exterior Shades – Shades are generally made from either fabric or vinyl, and some may even have small gaps in it to provide for light and to be able to view the outside. However, this very same factor is what reduces its level of energy efficiency. These shades are generally manually operated, although crank operation is also available to open or close the shade from the inside.

-          Awnings – There are many different types of awnings available, including window and door types, which provide shade and cover from the elements and the hot sun. Awnings of this type are generally permanently fixed to the wall, and help to keep the window area cool from the hot sun. They also protect the window from heavy rain and snow, and even hail. Awnings are made from fabric, and there is a wide range of options available in terms of colours, prints etc. They require more maintenance however, since you need to keep the metal parts of the awnings free from rust and dirt, so that they don’t get damaged. One disadvantage in terms of energy efficiency is that these are great for using during hot days to keep the interior cool, but won’t be that effective during the colder months.

-          Solar screens – Solar screens are great at reducing heat gain, and reflect ultraviolet rays. Hence, they prevent the interior of the home from getting damaged due to UV radiation, especially when it comes to furniture. They are quite similar to roller shades and can be fitted both on the exterior or interior.

-          UV Protection Film – This kind of window film is excellent at reducing the heat and also damages caused to furniture and other items from the hot sun, but still allow for maximum visibility and natural light. They are one of the best ways of saving on energy consumption, because of their great UV protective qualities, and are also generally easy to install.

Whatever exterior protection you use for the windows, the best way to save on energy bills is to use them in combination with interior blinds and shutters in Sydney. Both interior and exterior coverings used together can really help to reduce the energy consumption in a home, keeping the inside of the home cool and comfortable during hot summer months and warm and cosy during the cold winter months. They are ideal all year around.
